Joint Workshop on Regenerative Data Centers and Social Acceptance: Toshiba RIC × RWTH Aachen CCLab
Toshiba announcement sub title: Advancing collaborative research on regenerative data centers through participatory methods and multi-perspective evaluation.
On 10 March 2026, CCLab collaborated with Toshiba’s Research & Innovation Center (RIC) in a joint workshop exploring regenerative data centers and social acceptance. The workshop brought together researchers from both institutions and focused on defining shared research directions at the intersection of energy systems, spatial design, and community engagement. The session opened with presentations on CCLab’s ongoing work on social acceptance and value creation, followed by interactive discussions to develop a common understanding of key concepts.
A series of hands-on workshop activities structured the exchange. Using Toshiba’s Idea Wall Map framework, participants collaboratively mapped research areas, expertise, and emerging themes across both institutions. This was followed by a CCLab-led session applying an Inclusive Governance Tool to evaluate the social acceptance of different data center typologies, enabling a multi-perspective assessment of benefits, challenges, and societal impacts.
In a collaborative brainstorming session, participants identified key challenges and opportunities for future data center development. These included the importance of local economic integration, environmental and architectural quality, transparency in communication, and addressing public concerns related to technological uncertainty. At the same time, opportunities were highlighted in improving efficiency, resilience, and safety through innovative and predictive systems.
