Master Thesis – Exploring Augmented Reality in Urban Design
“Augmented Reality for Community-Based Collaborative Design: A Case Study of RWTH Aachen University Campus Transformation”

We’re excited to highlight CCLab member Liyuan Ma’s master’s thesis:
Augmented Reality for Community-Based Collaborative Design: A Case Study of RWTH Aachen University Campus Transformation
Supervisors: Univ.-Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Christa Reicher, Prof. Dr. Bige Tunçer, Dr. Ceren Sezer
In the research, he investigates how augmented reality (AR) can open up new possibilities for participatory urban design. By developing an AR-based tool, he explores how digital layers can enhance citizens’ understanding and engagement with urban spaces, making abstract planning ideas tangible and interactive.
His work offers a glimpse into a future where technology strengthens the bridge between planners and communities, creating more inclusive and informed design processes.
