The project aims to transform RWTH Aachen into a pioneering model for sustainable university campuses. By adopting a Living Lab approach, this initiative fosters collaboration among diverse stakeholders to tackle pressing sustainability challenges. Through thorough research and innovative design solutions for Campus Mitte, we are developing a Toolkit that serves as a valuable resource for other universities striving for sustainability. This project emphasizes nature-based solutions as a means to enhance our campus environment while effectively addressing complex societal issues.

The project positions RWTH Aachen University as a leader in sustainable campus development. By adopting the Living Lab framework, it fosters collaboration among diverse stakeholders, including academia, research, and industry, to tackle pressing sustainability challenges.
This initiative targets critical areas within Campus Mitte, proposing innovative design solutions rooted in extensive research and analysis. A central feature is the Toolkit, which serves as a resource for other campuses looking to implement sustainable practices. Our vision emphasizes connecting Campus Mitte to the city through enhanced green and blue infrastructure, improving pedestrian and bicycle accessibility while creating a more vibrant environment.
The Master Plan outlines interconnected interventions across six key areas, focusing on green corridors that link existing green spaces, enhance climate resilience, and integrate new water streams and aquaponic installations. Each intervention is designed to address specific challenges, embodying sustainable development goals and creating an eco-friendly urban ecosystem.
